ADVANTAGES
OF SPEAKING ENGLISH – SPEECH
I am here
before you to say a few words about the “Advantages of Speaking English”. English is a foreign language; but English is
no stranger to us. It was Loard Mecallay
who introduced English in India with the aim of creating some clerks to assist
the administration. But when we came
into contact with the treasures of the language, it created the national
feeling among us and this feeling led, indirectly, to the freedom
movement.
When India
became free, there was a demand from several quarters that English should be
banned from our land. Some claimed that,
being the language of our past rulers, it is painful reminder of our slavery. But with the passage of time we have become
less intolerant. Now English is the
second language of our Administration.
In the State of Nagaland it is the first language.
Why should
we study English? The answer is simple we are living in a world which is so
interlinked. We can’t live like a frog
in the well. We have to be increasingly
aware of the global event and should have contact with the outside world. The best medium of this contact is the
English Language. This language is read
and spoken by about one third of the inhabitants of the world. It is, therefore, the greatest window for us
to see the world outside. If we abolish
this language, we are throwing away a jewel.
In this
cyber world we can embrace all the priceless treasures of science and
technology, art and literature through this language. We are all aware of the fact that science and
Information Technology are developing very fast. Without this language, we will not find it
easy to keep abreast of the latest trends, researches and discoveries.
In
literature, the translation from English has enriched our language. So also the translation of the great works to
English spread the greatness of our Indian Culture and Civilization far and
wide. Of course, we must give importance
to the study of our mother tongue also which yields us nectar – like milk. So we shouldn’t neglect Malayalam at any
cost. But if we insist only the study of
our regional language and national language, we will have to stand as a
stranger before the tremendous achievements of the world around us. For all
these reasons it will be wise and prudent for us to study English language with
as much importance as our mother tongue.
Hence let’s create a world where a language can unite us.
